Originally built as a country retreat in the mid-16th century, Sprowston Manor, Marriott Hotel & Country Club, is now acclaimed as one of Norfolk’s leading Championship golf venues.
Sprowston Manor has been home to a golf course since the early 1980s, but it was only in 2003, when Ross McMurray of European Tour Design was brought in to give it a complete facelift, that the course started to earn the plaudits it now receives.
McMurray utilised the mature parkland from the original 18 holes plus additional land to the rear of the hotel to create a 6,527-yard layout that
is not just a fine test of golf but is thoroughly enjoyable at any time of year, for players of all abilities.
The architect – who recently completed the 2010 course at Celtic Manor and the Marquess Course at Woburn – used all his experience to craft
a memorable course which is built on undulating land and is studded with ancient oaks.
The course is packed with exhilarating holes, but some of the highlights include the signature par-4 7th which features ponds, weirs and fountains. Another highlight is the course bunkering which is at its most challenging on the 412-yard par-4 15th and the attractive par-4 16th which can both cause problems before the course finishes with a majestic 558-yard par-5 closing hole.
